Each year for over a decade the Delaware Genealogical Society (DGS) has contributed to the Delaware Historical Society (DHS) from $500 to $1,000 for the purchase of books with strong genealogical content to compliment the fine collection of the Delaware Historical Society. Some of the books contain genealogical information specific to Delaware (the main focus of the DHS collection) and some contain genealogical information on nearby counties in surounding states. We have not listed those books here, but they have been a significant resource for researchers. Many of the CDs noted below went beyond these geographic limits to provide genealogical information for all states in the U.S. or data specific to distant regions such as New England, Ohio, etc.

DGS' Block Donation of CD Databases
Our Magnificent New Resource at HSD

by Ralph D. Nelson, Jr. -- September 4, 2000

Last summer DGS donated to the Historical Society of Delaware (HSD) funds to buy a new computer and a CD (compact disk) reader. Over the past year Norman Thompson used a special DGS fund to buy forty CD databases to form the nucleus of this new collection. These databases provide a significant extension of the genealogical resources at the HSD because they contain information on millions of names outside of the Delaware area.

I have now installed the software required to use the disks, I have written a brief summary of how to put in and take out a CD, and for each database I tell how to open the database, perform a simple search for a name, print the selected information, and close the database.

Following is a summary of the new resources that the DGS has made available for public use. Keep it handy for the next time a friend asks you where to find information on an ancestor. And try it yourself. I found new information on almost every CD I installed!

Judge Clarence Taylor's Gift of Books and CDs
Benefits Several Libraries

by Ralph Nelson, president of DGS, 20 Sep 2001

Judge Clarence Taylor was a member of the Delaware Genealogical Society and a fifty-year member of the Delaware Society, Sons of the American Revolution. He had an active interest in family history, and he was actively engaged on research on his ancestors, many of whom lived on the DelMarVa peninsula.

After he died in February 2001, his widow, Janet Taylor, was kind enough to donate many of his recently-purchased items for the benefit of other researchers in this area. The materials were distributed through the Delaware Society SAR to the Delaware Genealogical Society (who had first pick to select books for use at the Historical Society of Delaware), the Delaware Public Archives (second pick), and the genealogical library of the Sons of the American Revolution (whatever remained).

A great part of the joy of genealogy comes from participating in a cooperative effort to develop good resources and in sharing the results of our research with others. This donation is a good example of such sharing.
